Carmo Convent

Last weekend I was with my family in Lisbon to visit one of the best icons from the earthquake in 1755, Carmo Convent.

Again with my camera I took some shots that I would like to show you…

If you have time please read more about History, Architecture and Museum on the Carmo Convent.

Gothic Main entrance

The Carmo Convent (Portuguese: Convento da Ordem do Carmo) is a monument located in the city of Lisbon, in Portugal. The mediaeval convent was ruined in the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake, and the ruins of its Gothic church (the Carmo Church or Igreja do Carmo) are the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the city.

The Carmo Convent is located in the Chiado neighbourhood, on a hill overlooking the Rossio square and facing the Lisbon Castle hill. It is located in front of a quiet square (Carmo Square), very close to the Santa Justa Lift.

Nowadays the ruined Carmo Church is used as an archaeological museum (the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo or Carmo Archaeological Museum).

Can you imagine here a Stained glass? View by the Santa Justa Lift

History

The Carmo Convent was founded as a convent for the Carmelite Order in 1389 by the Portuguese knight Nuno Álvares Pereira. Álvares Pereira was Constable of Portugal, meaning that he was the supreme military commander after the King. At the service of King John I, Álvares Pereira commanded the Portuguese army in the decisive Battle of Aljubarrota (1385), in which the Portuguese guaranteed their independence by defeating the Castilian army.

The Carmo Convent was initially inhabited by Carmelites from Moura (southern Portugal), which entered the convent in 1392. In 1404, the pious Álvares Pereira donated his wealth to the convent and, in 1423, he also became a brother of the convent.

On November 1, 1755, the great earthquake destroyed most of the convent and its church. The Convent library and its 5000 books were all lost. The convent was remodelled and eventually became a military quarter. The church was never fully rebuilt and, after a period as wood storage house, it was donated in 1864 to the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists, which turned the ruined building into a museum.

In the 20th century, during the Carnation Revolution, the Carmo Headquarters was the last stronghold of the Presidente of the Estado Novo, Marcelo Caetano, and the military loyal to him. The old Carmo Convent building is now used by the Municipal Guard (Guarda Republicana).

Architecture

The Carmo Convent and its Church were built between 1389 and 1423 in the plain Gothic style typical for the mendicant religious orders. There are also influences from the Monastery of Batalha, which had been founded by King John I and was being built at that same time. Compared to the other Gothic churches of the city, the Carmo Church was said to be the most imposing in its architecture and decoration.

The church has a Latin cross floorplan. The main facade has a portal with several archivolts and capitals decorated with vegetal and anthropomorphic motifs. The rose window over the portal is partially destroyed. The south side of the church is reinforced by five flying buttresses, added in 1399 after the south wall collapsed during the construction work. The old convent, located to the right of the facade, has been rebuilt in neo-Gothic style in the early 20th century.

The church interior has a nave with three aisles and an apse with a main chapel and four side chapels. The stone roof over the nave collapsed after the earthquake and was never rebuilt, and only the pointed arches between the pillars have survived.

Museum

The nave and apse of the Carmo Church are the setting for a small archaeological museum, with pieces from all periods of Portuguese history. The nave has a series of tombs, fountains, windows and other architectural relics from different places and styles.

The old apse chapels are also used as exhibition rooms. One of them houses notable pre-historical objects excavated from a fortification near Azambuja (3500–1500 BC).

The group of Gothic tombs include that of Fernão Sanches, a bastard son of King Dinis I, (early 14th century), decorated with scenes of boar hunting, as well as the magnificent tomb of King Ferdinand I (reign 1367-1383), transferred to the museum from the Franciscan Convent of Santarém. Other notable exhibits include a statue of a 12th century king (perhaps Afonso Henriques), Spanish-Moorish azulejos and objects from the Roman and Visigoth periods.

To make a new album photos and a new post in my Opera page, I had a idea to went in a great place in Portugal, Óbidos village, with my wife and son.

Óbidos is about 90km from Lisbon, we take the highway A8 to north. Weather was fantastic for photos.

When you arrive to that village you feel like if you had living in other time.

The area was taken from the Moors by the first kink of Portugal, Afonso Henriques,
in 1148. :king: :knight:

Castle, houses architecture, churches are like in that time of the kings.

But let’s go to start by the beginning of my trip.

Before you come inside the village this is the first view you had.

Main entrance to the castle.

Streets are tight but long

Candles...

Walls with that colors for every where...

Typical pots of flowers near the windows of the houses

In any street if you look to the right or to the left you will see something like that...

Round windows always with this predominantly blue...

All the houses have those two colors!:smile:

Balconies with very big pots...

Marks from the beginning...

From the wall of the castle you have some views...

Roofs of the village...

Yes, in the end you have the great view to the Castle of Óbidos!

If you are interested in more about Óbidos village take a look in that link Óbidos.

I will made a new album photos to show you the entire Óbidos Village Castle.

I hope you enjoy it!:smile:

North lights and poetry

Bright stars dance on a northern night
Down a green path across a purple sky
A celestial highway going home
Bringing the heavens to the earth.

by Joe

Glowing above me
Was a sea of green
With curving tendrils
And a satin sheen.

by Pamela

A sleepy village touches the stars
With colors of light in a darkened sky.
Flow towards the universe my friends
Find surprise in the freedom and happiness
Held truly within.

by Deborah

Snow and ice , and dark black night
You are looking at the skys…
Fairy tale of polar light
Is refracting in your eyes.

by Yulia

Behind the dance of cold fire
What silent mystery, what presence
Sends a message to inspire?

by Frog

The Royal ship Wasa

,

The Royal ship Wasa

This ship was a Royal warship. It was the biggest and the heavist of its Kind.
She was built to be used in the seabattles. During the war of 30 years
Also to represent the miltary and politacal power of the swedish King of War
Gustaf II Adolf. She was heavely decorated with sculptures in all coulors .This for to gloryfie
Political power and for to frighten enemies

The King Gustav II Adolf was a very skilled man of war. He had been a King for more than a deccad and when Wasa was built. The Swedish navy was in a bad condition . Sweden was in war with Polen since 1625 and one was concerned about the outcome of the thirty years of war in Germany. For to secure the interests of Sweden it was most important to have a strong navy.
The navy was hit by several difficulties during 1620.In 1625 10 ships were cought in a bad storm and sunk. In the war against Polen and Riga there where several more ships that went down. The situation was getting worse because of war in several directions.

In the beginning of 1600 the navy was built on smaller ships wiht decks cariying smaller canons. The ships where ceaper and they where better in use of escourt and guarding the important waters. A navy with bigger ships could give respect and establish authority over enemies and alliance. For this King of ambition was a navy of big and powerfull ships a moment that he could not let pass by. Vasa was the first of five ships that was ment to be the biggest and most powerfull ships of its time. In correspondence with the contructure they have fond out that the King was giving new mesurements and that he would not accept a smaller ship. The Wasa was also ment to be readdy earlier than from the beginning. The ship was very instable and very heavely loaded with an extra floor with cannons. The first test they made they had to stop after a few round. 30 men running from side to side She was to instable..

10 of august 1628 She went on her first tripp, She didn´t get far . Just about 2 km outside Stockholm she went down and sunk. They made attempts recovering the kanons in 17 century then she was forgotten . Until 1956 when she was discovered again. She was salvage in 1961 and brought to habour She was housed in a temporary museum called The Wasa Shipyard. In 1988 she was transported to The new Wasamuseum.

Why she went down and sunk is not clear yet. She was heavy and topbuilt, and she was instable in hard weather. Even when she was in the habour. She had one extra floor and was overloade The King was aware of the instability, in the same time he wanted to see her in the
War. Inspite of the knowledgement he permitted her to sail it was important to his politcal and miltary work.

Interigations where held about this catastrofy, The King him self had permitted her to sail so therefore noone could be held responsibel for this disaster.

Inside the ship and around the ship there where thousands of items found. The remains of 15 man , clothing , food drinks, tool, weapons, cannons , coins and 10 of the ships sails.

This post was made by me and by my Opera friend MrLeffe .
She write the text and I took the pictures.

Together we had that idea to make this post about this amazing subject “WASA”.
We hope with this post you can know a bit about the Wasa museum.
I and Leffe we was there in different times, and let me tell you that that exhibition it’s something wonderful.
If you went to Stockholm don’t forget to visit Wasa Museum.
