A great feat of strength?

He's the king of couch potatoes.

A Manhattan man has won his second couch potato contest. Stan Friedman, a 47-year-old research librarian, needed 18 hours 48 minutes 17 seconds of sports-watching time to outlast the competition at the second annual ESPN Zone Ultimate Couch Potato Competition.

The participants, sitting in recliners in front of dozens of televisions, weren't allowed to sleep or leave their recliners except for restroom breaks once every eight hours.

Friedman, like any good athlete, improved on his time. Last year, he needed 29 hours to win.

Starting the Year Off

, , , ...

The world is another year older and its inhabitants don't seem to be any wiser.

Between one war or another, cholera and ebola, aging dictators and the newer despots; parts of the world are in complete chaos and turmoil. My heart goes out to all those living day to day struggling to survive. What we here take for granted - a glass of clean water to drink is a rare commodity in some places.

Not to say that the west doesn't have it's own problems, ours are just a whole lot more trivial.

What a Joke!

I'm up and awake and doing the usual morning stuff - like reading the paper and I've got to share this one with you.

Being the last day of the year, there are always stories, videos and highlights of the past events. Sorry to be saying - but here comes a low point from the scientific community.

This little article comes from the department of blatantly obvious and yet - tax payer dollars funded these studies.

For example according to a recent study: "Women don’t like to be told they look fat" Okay, so I learned something from this study, any idiot can get a grant from the government.

A national survey found 68% of men have lied when asked by a woman: “Do I look fat in this?” The other 32% of respondents were said to have recently been dumped by their girlfriends or wives.

If you are up for a laugh, then be sure to check out The National Post for more of the truly obvious.

Busy - very busy

, ,

After a weekend of unseasonably warm weather, high winds and a lot of rain, it's almost back to normal. More snow on the way, temperatures dropping to where they belong and of course - still no public transit.

Schools are still out for the Christmas break, lots of people taking vacations so the roads aren't too congested. From what I've heard in the news there isn't much hope for a quick end to this strike. Next Monday will be a lot of fun for people.

Maybe we should bring in some of these Indian school buses.

The new year is almost here, I'm keeping the same resolution that I've had for years; it seems to work out no matter what I do.

So far this upcoming year is looking very busy. I'm off to Toronto for a couple of days in January, then Halifax and Fredericton in February. In March I'm off to Edmonton and Victoria, and in between it all I'm still teaching and writing.

I'm keeping this one short, but before I do go off for the night I wanted to bring you this one news article. Seems the crooks really are getting dumber by the minute.

The robber's threatening note made a Chicago bank job easy to solve: The FBI says the suspect wrote it on his pay stub.

An FBI affidavit says the man walked into a Fifth Third Bank on Friday and handed a teller a note that read "Be Quick Be Quit (sic). Give your cash or I'll shoot." The robber got about $400 but left half of his note.

Investigators found the other half outside the bank's front doors. Authorities say that part of the man's October pay stub had his name and address.

The suspect was arrested at his Cary home. A judge ordered him held without bond Monday. If convicted of bank robbery, he faces 20 years in prison.

Now there's a real genius!

I hope that you all have a safe and happy new year.

A short time ago I pointed out that terrible long winded commercial with Brooke Sheilds and the VW Routan. Guess what? Now you can make a baby with Brooke or anyone else!

The RoutanBabymaker 3000 is a plaything in which two clear photos of the respective "parents" results in a virtual baby.

Check it out for yourself and have a laugh or two.
