Mindless Entertainment

, ,

Okay so I didn't get a lot of work done. Instead I made popcorn and loaded up a couple of movies to sit back and watch.

Neither of my choices were big box office hits, in fact they both did pretty poorly once the critics had their way with them. I'm not a critic, just a fan of entertainment and if that is what you are looking for then read on.

A Boring Sunday

, ,

Up early this morning and wondering ...why am I awake and what am I going to do now?

Television just plain sucks any day of the week so that was out of the question. I've read every book in the place. Didn't feel like doing any house cleaning. So what do you do at 6:30 in the morning on a Sunday?

I'm not sure what you would do, but I plugged in a movie.

Good For The Soul

With all the movie festivals that have been going on the past few weeks there has been little attention paid to the animation festival currently underway.

Unlike the Toronto Film Festival the Ottawa International Animation Festival isn't geared towards "stars". What it is geared towards are the many, many fine animations produced around the world.

From September 17 - 21, the nation's capital once again becomes the center of the animation universe. The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is the largest event of its kind in North America, attracting attendees from around the world. Film buffs, art lovers and cartoon fans won't want to miss the great line up of screenings taking place at the ByTowne Cinema, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Empire Theatres Rideau Centre.

Little bit of trivia for you ...This is the 20th anniversary of the release Who Framed Roger Rabbit. 326 animators worked full-time on the film. In total, 82,080 frames of animation were drawn.

More Movies

Summer has come back in a big way, temperatures soaring into the 30's (90's for you folks still on fahrenheit), not a cloud in the sky and not a tiny little breeze blowing either. To put it real simple, it's too stinking hot to go outside and do anything.

So, Wuzzy and I loaded up a couple of movies and sat on our butts drinking lots of cold water and eating peanuts all afternoon. I'm turning that ratty into a couch potatoe!

The Promotion
Was the first movie we stared at and I have to say not even a fresh handfull of peanuts was enough to keep Wuzzy interested in the film.

Not to say its a bad movie, it is more like the type where you keep expecting something to happen and it never does.

Seann William Scott usually has energy and a charisma that is very evident on the screen. There seems to be an attempt to pull a Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell with a performance that would be partly funny, partly tragic. Unfortunately, he fails on both fronts. John C Reilly, who is a tremendous character actor and a comedy guy is disappointing at best.

Simple story, two guys, one job and both want it. Save this one for a weekend when there is nothing else left on the shelf.

Big Stan marks Rob Schneider's directorial debut.

Rob Schneider plays a corrupt time share salesman who's made millions, gets caught and sent to prison. His main fear is that he is going to be violently raped over and over during his stay and so enlists a martial arts master (David Carradine) to teach him how to defend himself before he's incarcerated.

It's not the best comedy flick out there, but I've definitely seen worse. All in all I found this movie pretty damn amusing, with some definite laugh out loud moments to be had. I would say if you want a feel good comedy with no great expectations this one will do it.

Insanitarium
What's a hot afternoon without at least one psycho movie?

I felt like I saw this movie before and then it hit me ...One flew Over The Cuckoos Nest. You have the nuts in the psych ward, the head nurse, the young nurse, group therapy sessions and of course even a lobotomy. Okay, so that was most of it but then where did I see this type of zombie thingy ...28 Days Later was where.

Typical movie of this genre, evil Doctor, experiments out of control, good guy and of course someone to rescue in this case his sister.

Not a bad movie, not a great movie, Wuzzy went to sleep during it. The characters just aren't interesting enough to care about and so this movie falls flat on its face.

Rent this only if you are a fan of hospital gore flicks, other than that ...don't waste your time.

Weekend Time Killers

, , , ...

I haven't been online much, simply no time. What I've been doing is catching up on my reading, watching a lot of movies and playing with baby rats.

Yes you read that correctly baby rats and lots of them! Despite what a lot of people think, rats are one of the nicest little pets anyone could ask for; playfull, intelligent and extremely friendly.

Wuzzy was born on April 1 of this year and he's as good a movie critic as I am. Perched on the arm of the couch he'll sit and watch the TV for hours if I let him. Wuzzies picks and pans are coming up.

Doomsday
Imagine if you will the movie "Children of Men" then toss out the plot, acting or budget and you have Doomsday. Typical post-apocalyptic type movie, you've got a virus, martial law, death, suffering and for some odd reason a battle between punkers and medieval knights.

A mix of Braveheart, Mad Max, 28 Days Later, and a musical score that seems right out of place and well you get the idea. Not the best movie in the world, but also not the worst.

Wuzzy says there wasn't enough colour in it to keep him watching, but he's a rat what does he know.

Felon
Not your typical prison movie.
Felon is well written and one of the best movies I watched this weekend.

Felon is about a man who is working hard to create a life for himself and his family, he has worked hard to establish his own business and feels as though he is finally ready to start reaping the fruits of his labour. Then, life brings a unexpected twist and he finds himself in prison. From this point on, we see transformations of a man who is forced into a new world where he has no control.

"When your life is defined by a single action, you change the concept of time"

Wuzzy gives it two paws up, lots of action and stuff happening on the screen. Definitely worth the rental and I'll probably add it to my own permanent collection.

Witless Protection
The story centers on a small-town sheriff who witnesses what he believes is a kidnapping and rushes to rescue a woman. The kidnappers turn out to be FBI agents assigned to protect her and deliver her to a big Enron-type corruption trial in Chicago but are later found to be on the take and are villains who are bent on killing her.

Starring Larry the Cable Guy and for some reason Jenny McCarthy, Witless Protection is silly simple fun.
