Update (12/17/05): There has been some debate about this question. To be fair, I was accepting a combination of years and version numbers. Opera went "free" in 2000 with version 5.0, in 2005 with version 8.02 during the online birthday party, and 2005 with Opera 8.5. Someone have raised the point that Opera was Free with version 5, and ad-free with version 8.5. His answer and arguments are very good - and I will also accept rmccabe916 as another T-shirt winner of this day with his answer of:
Opera became freeware in the year 2000. Contrary to what many believe, Opera has always been free since then.
