Opera Mini 4.2 beta available for testing!
By ManneS. Tuesday, 11. November 2008, 09:04:39
We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.2. You can download it from http://mini.opera.com/beta
Opera Mini 4.2 beta will be installed next to your other Opera Mini version(s), so there's no need to delete anything before downloading the beta.
Here are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.1:
- Synchronize, edit and delete notes via Opera Link
- 24 new languages
- Better handling of RTSP, enabling more users to watch video
- Skins are back (along with new skins)
- "Accept" link at the end of the EULA (for BlackBerry users)
In addition we are now in the progress of enabling global load balancing for all our users. See the blog post for more info.
We hope you all enjoy this beta as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our forum or directly in our feedback thread. Bugs can also be reported directly from Opera Mini (Menu -> Tools-> Help -> Bug report).
Known issues
As this is a beta, there are a couple of known issues. Here's a list of some of them:
- Some of the new languages are not fully translated for the beta, but will be fully supported for the final version.
- There are several issues with notes in Opera Link. Your device may not support viewing or editing of very large notes. Backup your notes before trying!
What is RTSP
RTSP is a protocol used for streaming media, such as videos. If your phone supports RTSP via Opera Mini, you should be able to play e.g. YouTube videos on your phone. These will not be played in Opera Mini, but by the media software in the device. We would like to remind those of you without a fixed data subscription that streaming media requires a lot of
data traffic, and can be very expensive. Depending on the device, you may have to configure a new access point before streaming works. Also, some devices will not do streaming unless they are connected via WiFi (we have seen this on BlackBerry).
Now we will do our best to finish the final release for you. Enjoy the beta!
Best regards,
The Opera Mini team

Thanks for the beta. Muuuuch more faster than Opera Mini 4.1
EDIT: In landscape mode the left and right softkeys are changed. The left should remain as menu key and the right one should remain as Back key. So I think they should have the same function they have in portrait mode. It's less confusing.

via RTSP we can now listen to the numerous BBC Radio channels and excellent programs right in our mobile phones.
[provided, of course, BBC engineers will have enough of common sense not to move internet broadcasting to that lame Adobe Flash entirely...]

@sansheet: solve what? Do you really think anyone can read your mind to understand what you could possibly mean by that?

I have one suggestion. You know how Mini snaps to columns of text in desktop view mode? Well, sometimes this is a little irritating, especially if the column has multiple paragraphs with different indentation, and you can't see the entire width of the paragraph in one go, and have to constantly move left and right to read each sentence. It would be useful to have the option to turn the snap to text feature off.

What about having OM start with unwrapped text, to give best possible desktop view of page, then wrap text automaticly when zoomed in...
(Would probably add alot kb to OM file size, and wrapping would maybe take some annoying seconds ? )

Sometimes, this snapping feature doesn't work very well, and you're left with a part of the text column hidden off-screen. This typically seems to happen when the text column consists of multiple paragraphs with different indentation. And then you have to continuously move the screen left to right to read each sentence, even with the text screen wrapping feature turned on.
Because of this, it might be useful to be able to turn the snap-to-text feature off, so Mini doesn't automatically jump and stick to text columns, so you can move freely across a webpage.

How about providing an option after which, Opera Link would only synch bookmarks in Mini when the application starts, or whenever the user manually synchs.
Opera could leave synching enabled by default, but just provide an option to turn this off and manually synch, for power users.

U can upload file more than 300kb from opera mini 4.1&4.2 U should change the connection to HTTP to socket in the settings, then it will do, but the uploading speed is too less, but it facilitate uploading files more than 300kb upto 2-3Mb.

I'm writing from Italy and I use Opera Mini 4.2 on a Nokia N78.
I think the software is in a good state of progress; I didn't find particular issues (some forcet shout down but it occured also with the 4.1).
There are 3 things that, in my oponion, Opera Mini should have:
1_ The way to cut and copy the address links of the pages (#1)
2_ Select a folder for all downloads: is a very annoing thing choose anytime a sub sub folder for any download
3_ The possibility to select parts of text the the pages anche copy them.
What do you thing about these features?
Sorry for any english mistake I've made
Hope to hear you feedback!
Bye!
