Opera Mini 4.2 beta available for testing!

, ,

We are proud to announce the beta release of Opera Mini 4.2. You can download it from http://mini.opera.com/beta

Opera Mini 4.2 beta will be installed next to your other Opera Mini version(s), so there's no need to delete anything before downloading the beta.

Here are the new features added since Opera Mini 4.1:
  • Synchronize, edit and delete notes via Opera Link
  • 24 new languages
  • Better handling of RTSP, enabling more users to watch video
  • Skins are back (along with new skins)
  • "Accept" link at the end of the EULA (for BlackBerry users)

In addition we are now in the progress of enabling global load balancing for all our users. See the blog post for more info.

We hope you all enjoy this beta as much as us, and that you will provide feedback in our forum or directly in our feedback thread. Bugs can also be reported directly from Opera Mini (Menu -> Tools-> Help -> Bug report).

Known issues

As this is a beta, there are a couple of known issues. Here's a list of some of them:
  • Some of the new languages are not fully translated for the beta, but will be fully supported for the final version.
  • There are several issues with notes in Opera Link. Your device may not support viewing or editing of very large notes. Backup your notes before trying!

What is RTSP

RTSP is a protocol used for streaming media, such as videos. If your phone supports RTSP via Opera Mini, you should be able to play e.g. YouTube videos on your phone. These will not be played in Opera Mini, but by the media software in the device. We would like to remind those of you without a fixed data subscription that streaming media requires a lot of
data traffic, and can be very expensive. Depending on the device, you may have to configure a new access point before streaming works. Also, some devices will not do streaming unless they are connected via WiFi (we have seen this on BlackBerry).

Now we will do our best to finish the final release for you. Enjoy the beta!

Best regards,
The Opera Mini team

Help us test our new US data centreOpera Mini 4.2 unleashed!

www.egotastic.com is being incorrectly rendered. I only get the top egotastic logo and anything more. :frown:

Thanks for the beta. Muuuuch more faster than Opera Mini 4.1

EDIT: In landscape mode the left and right softkeys are changed. The left should remain as menu key and the right one should remain as Back key. So I think they should have the same function they have in portrait mode. It's less confusing.

I really hope some really neat features are added into the final 4.2 release. The last point release (4.0 to 4.1) added some pretty neat features.

hey, great news!

via RTSP we can now listen to the numerous BBC Radio channels and excellent programs right in our mobile phones.

[provided, of course, BBC engineers will have enough of common sense not to move internet broadcasting to that lame Adobe Flash entirely...]

I can't get YouTube video plaing on my p1i phone. After I click on a video link, it starts application, and show rotating wait icon for one minute or so. Then it says that probably a link is not working...
I connected via WiFi...

@Qasibr: whine, whine, whine. You want them to add even more features in a point release rather than fix bugs? Amazing.

@sansheet: solve what? Do you really think anyone can read your mind to understand what you could possibly mean by that?

How about syncing Opera Mini bookmarks between multiple mobile devices running Opera Mini? A "backup" feature would accomplish the same thing.

I use Opera Mini on three separate devices and upgrade frequently.

While not completely related to the 4.2beta I do have a bug I'd love to see squashed in 4.2. On Blackberry OS 4.5 Opera Mini does not allow applications associated with the convenience key to come to the foreground. This works correctly with all builtin apps and all other third party apps I have installed. I've tried associating different apps with the convenience key and they all exhibit the same behavior.

I don't get what's unbelievable about wanting new features in a new version. Opera's been releasing two versions of Mini a year, it doesn't matter if they're point releases or major revisions, they've always added new stuff. So quit trolling.

I have one suggestion. You know how Mini snaps to columns of text in desktop view mode? Well, sometimes this is a little irritating, especially if the column has multiple paragraphs with different indentation, and you can't see the entire width of the paragraph in one go, and have to constantly move left and right to read each sentence. It would be useful to have the option to turn the snap to text feature off.

You mean a shortcut (one klick), replacing opera:config setting *Fit text to screen* ?

What about having OM start with unwrapped text, to give best possible desktop view of page, then wrap text automaticly when zoomed in...

(Would probably add alot kb to OM file size, and wrapping would maybe take some annoying seconds ? )

Hello there. I wanted to thank the Opera team for a fantastic new version of Opera Mini, even if it's still a beta. Pages are now loading incredibly fast, thanks to the intelligent routing to either the EU or the US server farm. I love Opera Mini and Portable Opera. B-) Keep up the good work!

I wasn't talking about the 'fit text to screen feature', invester. My point was, that when Mini fits the text to your screen, Mini snaps to the text column when you move left-to-right across a webpage.

Sometimes, this snapping feature doesn't work very well, and you're left with a part of the text column hidden off-screen. This typically seems to happen when the text column consists of multiple paragraphs with different indentation. And then you have to continuously move the screen left to right to read each sentence, even with the text screen wrapping feature turned on.

Because of this, it might be useful to be able to turn the snap-to-text feature off, so Mini doesn't automatically jump and stick to text columns, so you can move freely across a webpage.

Im a big opera fan. Thanx for the new version 4.2. Content loads faster, but im missing landscape mode. I got used 2 using landscape mode with on my N82. Please help. . . . Marwaan

There are a few ways you can get landscape mode on the N82. Easiest way is to turn the accelerometer on and turn the phone. Or you could do it manually by clicking *# to change the orientation mode of the application. :D

Hey I have another idea. If you use Opera Link, every single time you bookmark a webpage in Mini, the program slows down or freezes for about ten seconds while it synchronizes your bookmarks with the server. This is especially so if you've got even a moderately large collection of bookmarks saved on Mini.

How about providing an option after which, Opera Link would only synch bookmarks in Mini when the application starts, or whenever the user manually synchs.

Opera could leave synching enabled by default, but just provide an option to turn this off and manually synch, for power users.

By Qasibr, # 16. November 2008, 10:11:19

avatar
The option is there. Just sign in once a day/week/century to synch things then sign out again.

For Mitsos-The-Great:

U can upload file more than 300kb from opera mini 4.1&4.2 U should change the connection to HTTP to socket in the settings, then it will do, but the uploading speed is too less, but it facilitate uploading files more than 300kb upto 2-3Mb.

I know i can turn on accelerometer, but version 4.1 used to give me that option. 4.2 dont give me 'landscape view'option. I dont want to do it like that, then everything goes landscape everytime i shift my phone.
Please, if anybody knows where i can download version 4.2 that gives that option to choose 'landscape view' within operamini.. . . , . . Thanx Marwaan

By Kniterider, # 20. November 2008, 17:48:31

Just go to settings and click Landscape Mode. It's the second option on the checklist.

Hi all,
I'm writing from Italy and I use Opera Mini 4.2 on a Nokia N78.
I think the software is in a good state of progress; I didn't find particular issues (some forcet shout down but it occured also with the 4.1).
There are 3 things that, in my oponion, Opera Mini should have:
1_ The way to cut and copy the address links of the pages (#1)
2_ Select a folder for all downloads: is a very annoing thing choose anytime a sub sub folder for any download
3_ The possibility to select parts of text the the pages anche copy them.

What do you thing about these features?
Sorry for any english mistake I've made p:

Hope to hear you feedback!
Bye!

Earliest n82 I've seen was preproduction and that came with v9 firmware. It's possible you've got network specific firmware that's playing silly buggers, in which case can't help you I'm afraid. Can you not press * then # to change to landscape mode?

By Furie, # 22. November 2008, 12:38:45

Mattcann, there's a link on the sidebar here for the Opera Mini forum. In there is a sticky post to place suggestions for new features you want in the application. Some get chosen, some don't. Good luck.

Hi Mattcan, im from South Africa. And u took the words right off my fingertips. Thats xactly what i want, but i didnt know how to put it in words.
I downloaded version 4.1 again, cause it gives me the landscape option. But u c, i read somewhere here that im not the only the 1. So please. If the opera team can sort it out, i would appreciate it.
