Kvadrat: Bouroullec Brothers / Vitra: Domestic Shell

The house as a plastic igloo? The need for privacy is always growing and while we sleep and work we don’t want to be seen by others. It is increasingly difficult to isolate oneself, even when alone. This scaly wall looks like a shell from the Sea of Switzerland.

Open Competition: Depop: Roba

, , , ...

Franca Pauli and Dario Colombo, graphic designer and photographer, work in the field of design and communication with their company Balilla Enterprises. They are also the conceivers of a foundation for contemporary culture, Clio, with which for a number of years they have been pursuing a broad and democratic approach to design: their competitions, organised every two years, are open to all with no limits in terms of age, profession, qualifications or education and are an invitation to build objects by hand. After asking participants to design a lamp and a game, the brief for this year, the third edition of the competition (entitled ‘Roba’), is to make an item clothing.

All the designs entered will be brought together in an exhibition (at the Museo Santa Caterina in Treviso from 16 to 30 June), a book will be published and then they will be sold at a charity auction to raise money for Unicef for the distribution of rehydration packs in Africa. The three winners (announced 30 June) will each receive a prize of 2000 euro.

Concorso di design popolare: Depop: Roba

, , , ...

Randel Byrd: MasterPod

, , , ...

MonsterPod™ was the idea of Randel Byrd during a trip overseas. Traveling alone, he found it difficult taking pictures and being in his pictures at the same time.

Returning with over 620 digital pictures and only being in 30 of them, he thought there had to be a better way. Randel didn't like always asking someone to hold his camera, and he did not like balancing it precariously on different objects. At one point he thought it would be great to just have a piece of bubble gum to stick to the bottom.

Upon returning to the United States he began development on the MonsterPod™ as a unique idea for mounting and stabilizing his digital camera. His idea was to revolve around using a Viscoelastic Morphing Polymer as a means to support his digital camera at various angles.

In collaboration with his son Tyler Byrd and after several months of experimentation, in 2005 the two filed their first patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In the months thereafter, they worked hard on further developing and refining their invention and filed two more patents. They dubbed the name, MonsterPod™ due to its remarkable ability to be molded and its ability to adhere to nearly any surface and shape.

Salone del mobile 2007 [Milano]

, , ,

The signs of reprisal in the furniture sector form the background to all the preparatory work going into the next edition of i Saloni which, like last year, will be held in the New Milan Fairgrounds in Rho from 18th to 23rd April. It will also host the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Euroluce, the International Furnishings Accessories Exhibition and SaloneSatellite.

Along with the general financial expectations, there is the amazing success of the 2006 edition to consider – here are just some of the figures: 2,578 exhibitors, 229,059 square metres, 223,138 visitors, of whom 123,391 came from 146 different countries and 4,128 journalists, of whom 2,065 came from 57 different countries – and this year the fact that demand from exhibitors and for exhibition space has far outstripped supply means that yet again we are taking on the challenge of both the exhibition and the sector with tremendous optimism.

I Saloni 2007: si riparte!

Grandi progetti, grandi allestimenti, grande affluenza.
