If it's Tuesday, it's time. I upgraded my laptop to Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake - final. Everything that worked in the RC version works in final; the wireless gets detected automatically (as `eth1`, fixed by replacing with `wlan0` in `/etc/iftab`).

Ubuntu
If it's Tuesday, it's time. I upgraded my laptop to Ubuntu 6.06 RC. Everything that worked in v5.10 works in v6.06, and aparently the wireless gets detected automatically.
Can't install Opera 9 (20060518).. maybe because the DEB package is built for v5.10.. Both shared and static complan about "dependency not satisfiable: xlib6g|xlibs". I've even tried adding
deb.opera.com to
apt-get's
sources.list file
deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ unstable non-free
The packages can't be found
Update:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/OperaBrowser#head-24c2fc6df797156ba6e4c9b5d5d5fa58a83243de worked like a charm
I think I ruined this distro also with my attempts to install the wireless.

The interface only gets recognised as eth1 (!) and the wired Ethernet eth0 shows random activity, losses connection (admittedly only during my Wifi/driver/module experiments). Accessing LAN Win workgroup computers from Ubuntu works 100%, viceversa - less than.

Ubuntu

Got myself my first laptop. The
CPU Pentium M 740 1.73 GHz 2 MB SLC, TFT 15.4" WXGA (1280x800), 512MB DDR2, 60GB HDD 5400RPM, 8x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer, LAN, WLAN Dell™Wireless 1370 (802.11b/g, 54Mbps), Modem, Free DOS-type
Dell Inspiron 1300This entry is to document my attempts to get Linux Ubuntu running as smoothly as possible on it.
So I got the
Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger CDs (install & live) from the closest mirror. Yes, I know 6.10 is less than 2 weeks away. And no, I don't want the K Desktop Environment. Burn. Install (I chose the en_US layout). Update packages.
