Is It Time To Leave My Love For Another?

,

Touchscreen phones - I really can't stand them. There's no tactile feedback when you touch a "button". No reassuring clicks when typing. And the screens, don't get me started on how easily they scratch. As a result, the Nokia 5800 touchscreen S60 version 5 phone was way down at the bottom of my list of interests.

Sure, it's got some interesting features, but they never got me past my hatred of touchscreens.

  • 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera.
  • 3.2 inch, 640x320 pixel screen.
  • New improved interface with full backwards compatibility between applications.
  • HSDPA, Wi-Fi and GPS.
  • Full external sensor support including accelerometer.
  • Support for up to 32gb memory cards with an 8gb card in the box.
  • Enhanced web browser with full widget support and enhanced widget engine enabling access to core applications.
  • Stereo speakers.
  • Up to 9.5 hours talk time.
  • TV-out capabilities.

Some great features there but not enough to shell out £400 on a new phone whose main feature (the touchscreen) I don't like anyway. However, the announcement that the phone would be £215 (€274, $379, R3239) SIM free, blew my reservations out of the water.

I started thinking about the fact that I've just won a bluetooth keyboard and would mostly be using the phone via the keyboard while plugged into the TV, or resting on it's stand. It's amazing how cheap this phone is being launched at. In every way it's an upgrade for me and at a ridiculously cheap price too.

Considering the package contains an 8gb memory card, the stylish stand pictured above, a TV-out cable, two stylus, a thumb plectrum attached to the wrist strap and a protective carry case, the price just gets better and better.

Well done Nokia. You've just taken the 5800 from the very bottom of my list to top of the pile.

Why would you want to plug your phone into the TV?

I created this entire page on my phone. Check this out to see how it would be plugged into the TV. Seeing it a little larger would always be a welcome rest for my eyesight.

Day-Um! Sounds like it has everything but a Gingerbread Toaster Slot.

If you've seen the gingerbread that gets made in our house you'd know that's a good thing.

Don't you use your phone while out and about? There's nowhere I use mine that an external keyboard would be good for.
Nice-looking phone though . A proper phone too, not like a certain fruit-related fashion blob.

It's actually smaller than the fruit. Got some beautiful features though. Out and about I mostly use mine as a camera, calendar and occasionally a music player. It's indoors where the magic begins. :wizard:

As for the keyboard. When mine arrives (must check with Raj for when that'll be) it'll have a lap-lock so I can use it wherever as well as a cradle for whichever phone I'm using.

I'm not too fond of touchscreens either, but I must admit that this look pretty cool!

The price is very affordable, even for my opinion. I am not demanding phone user and NEVER give more than 150 eur for phone, but the possibilities of this one makes it worth some extra cash

@ Mik: Yeah, but can you use it as a phone? p:

The question is, can Mik use a phone? I can imagine this guy surfing and clogging on his mobile whilst using a pc VOIP as his phone.

Voice? Phones can do voice? :eyes: Do you record your voice using the video player, upload it to an online site and send the link to people via an instant message? :D

I hear the numbers on the keys once served some kind of arcane purpose...sorcery, perhaps :insane:

By H82typ, # 4. October 2008, 20:32:39

Yeah, it was black magic. People used to chant "die all" while fingering the numbers.

Do what?

Is there a phone there that looks good for the contract price?

By Dacotah, # 8. October 2008, 18:21:33

Never get a contract online Carol. They're not regulated the same way shops are.

By Furie, # 8. October 2008, 19:30:56

Ok Mik. Thank you.
