THE HUNT FOR THE JAPANESE WHALE POACHERS RESUMES...

Captain Watson: "We need to get back there and stop this slaughter... Once we return we can put a stop to this killing once again."

After twelve days of repairs, refueling, re-crewing, re-supplying and re-provisioning, the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin is returning to the Southern Ocean. The estimated time for departure is 2000 hours Melbourne time on Thursday February 14.

“A special thank-you to Australia,” said Captain Paul Watson. “You helped to send the Steve Irwin back to sea as a Valentine’s Day gift to the whales.”

Donations of money for fuel, donations of food and supplies flooded onto the decks of the whale conservation ship during the brief stay in Victoria docklands.

“We are anxious to return to the coast of Antarctica,” said Sea Shepherd cook Amber Paarman from South Africa. “Every moment that we are not on the tail of the Japanese fleet means that the lives of the whales are in peril.”

The Steve Irwin intends to harass and intervene against illegal Japanese whaling for the next four to five weeks. This should stop them to the end of the whaling season. The fleet’s operations were shut down for more than three weeks in January. Sea Shepherd intends to shut them down again.

“In January we prevented them from slaughtering whales for three weeks, we cost the Japanese over two million dollars in fuel during the pursuit and we exposed their illegal whaling activities worldwide and most importantly we got the story into the Japanese media. This provoked a real debate in Japan on the cost of whaling to Japan’s reputation,” said Captain Paul Watson.

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society does not intend to surrender the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to the poachers. After this season, Captain Paul Watson is working to secure a 2nd ship with the objective of mounting a non-stop pursuit for the 2008/2009 whaling season.

The Steve Irwin dropped off 16 volunteer crewmembers in Melbourne on February 2nd and 19 volunteers have joined the crew. Eleven crewmembers have been with the campaign from the beginning.

The 32 crew, 8 women and 24 men returning to the Southern Oceans represent 10 different nationalities. In addition to 15 Australians, crewmembers have joined from New Zealand, Canada, the U.S.A., Sweden, South Africa, the Netherlands, the U.K. Spain, and Japan.

THE WORLD WIDE WHALE WARS...

Commentary by Captain Paul Watson
On Board the Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin

The fight to protect whalekind from the greed of humankind is being fought all over the globe.

The Sea Shepherd’s Operation Migaloo is presently opposing illegal Japanese whaling operations in the Southern Ocean.

Norway has just announced they intend to slaughter 1,052 Minke whales this year.

The Danish Faeroe Islands continue to kill some 3,000 Pilot whales on their beaches and more than 22,000 dolphins are viciously butchered on the shores of Japan each year.

The United States Navy keeps trying to test weapons that kill whales and their destructive low frequency sonar devices have already killed hundreds of cetaceans, large and small.

Whales are dying and their killers are constantly attempting to escalate their numbers in their quest to profit from one of the most vicious and merciless forms of hunting in the world.

For hundreds of years, humans have waged bloody war on the whales and their numbers are less than 10% of what they once were. A few species have fallen to less than 1% and some like the Biscayan right whale and the Atlantic Grey have been driven to extinction.

And the killing goes on.

But no longer unopposed. People all over the world are now fighting for the whales and on many fronts.

And there is no doubt that the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is the leading opponent to the slaughter and certainly the most aggressive and uncompromising opponent of whaling. In fact Sea Shepherd ships are the only thing that whalers seem to fear and when they see us they run like the cruel cowards they are.

Last August another whaler was sunk in Norway - a total write off and a four million dollar loss. That’s a total of five Norwegian whalers sunk since 1992 when myself and two other Sea Shepherd crew sent the pirate Norwegian whaler Nybraena to the bottom of the harbor in the Lofoten Islands.

This week a U.S. Federal judge struck down a waiver issued by the White House that would have exempted the U.S. Navy from obeying a court order banning sonar training exercises that endanger whales.

Last month the Japanese whaling fleet was blocked for over three weeks from killing whales and Sea Shepherd will be returning next week to attempt to intervene to stop the harpoons for another three to four weeks.

Last summer, Sea Shepherd’s Operation Ragnarok helped to end Icelandic whaling and no whales were killed.

In October, Sea Shepherd joined other activists and surfers led by world class free surfer Dave Rastovich in interfering with the barbaric slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

All over the world Japanese embassies and consulates are being picketed and petitioned by people deeply offended by Japanese whaling policies.

People are writing letters, signing petitions, boycotting Japanese and Norwegian goods and services. Musicians, artists, business people, teachers, lawyers, politicians, and children are standing up and saying that this slaughter is not to be tolerated any longer.

We have a powerful global movement and it is speaking in one voice - STOP THE BLOODY WHALING!

I think back to that day in June 1975 when I was at the helm of the first boat to ever intervene against whaling when Robert Hunter and I put our bodies on the line to protect a pod of Sperm whales from a Soviet harpoon vessel.

Little did I realize then just how powerful the movement would be that we launched that day. Little did I dream that I would be fighting the whale wars for the next thirty-three years.

And we are still at it. After more than 250 voyages, I can look back on a history of interventions that have saved the lives of thousands of whales and tens of thousands of dolphins. Sometimes I am amazed that I am still alive and even more amazed that in all these years we have never had anyone seriously injured or killed and we have never injured or killed any of our opposition.

Next week we return to the battle in the Southern Ocean and once again into the breach as we search out and go head to head with the Japanese whaling fleet. It will be our one ship against their seven vessels, our unarmed volunteer crew against their paid killers with their armed Japanese Coast Guard bodyguards, our passion against their ruthlessness, and our courage against their craven cowardice.

And despite the inequality of our numbers we will win because we now have an international movement to back up our interventions and to continuously hammer the message that whaling by anyone, anywhere, for any reason must be abolished.

We have these vicious killers on the run and we intend to keep them on the run, for the rest of this year and again next year. We will never retreat from this mission and we will never surrender and I swear that we will end this atrocity.

I have a fair ship and a courageous crew and once again we will sail into harm’s way and once again we will save the lives of whales.

And for the person standing in front of an Embassy with a protest sign, and the person writing a letter to the editor to oppose whaling and the person writing out a check to finance our interventions and the person standing before the judge pleading for the whales and the person writing for the newspapers or hosting a television news program, I say to you - thank-you.

Movements are built on diversity both in strategies and tactics and the strength of a movement lies in that diversity. We have that diversity.

And we will win, for the whales and for the honour of humanity, because we will be the people that future generations will look back and thank for having the courage, the dedication and the passion to ensure that whales will survive and that they will not live in a future where the whales will be viewed the same way that we now view dinosaurs - as large fantastic wondrous creatures that went extinct.

ANTI-WHALERS TIED UP AND DUNKED...

Two anti-whaling activists were tied to the rails of a Japanese harpoon ship and immersed up to their waists in freezing Antarctic seawater after an attempt to throw one overboard on Tuesday, an eyewitness says.

Benjamin Potts, 28, of Sydney, and Giles Lane, 35, from Britain, crew members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel Steve Irwin, boarded the Japanese harpoon vessel Yushin Maru No 2 about 4pm (AEDT) yesterday (AEDT) to deliver a written plea to stop killing whales.

AUSTRALIA HAS 'SHOCKING' EVIDENCE OF JAPAN'S WHALING...
— Australia has "shocking" photographic evidence to back an international legal bid to stop Japanese whaling in Antarctic waters, the government said Thursday.

One picture reportedly showing a mother whale and her calf being dragged aboard a Japanese whaler after being harpooned was described as sickening by Environment Minister Peter Garrett.

"I guess when I saw the photos I just felt a bit of a sick feeling, as well as a sense of sadness," said Garrett, a former rock star with protest group Midnight Oil.

"It's very disappointing. It's distressing when you think that it can take up to 15 minutes after a harpoon actually hits a whale for the whale to die.

"It's even sadder when you consider there's a calf involved."

A gaping wound visible on the minke whale calf's side as it is hauled up a blood-soaked slipway into the boat was reportedly caused by an explosive-packed harpoon.

The picture was one of many taken from an Australian customs vessel tracking the whalers to build up evidence against the kill, and Customs Minister Bob Debus said the pile of "shocking images" would support legal action to stop the annual slaughter.

"They will help us to back up the Australian government's argument in an international court case, the details of which are still to be worked out, to suggest that whaling should be stopped," Debus told reporters.

Australia has taken a leading role in opposing Japan's use of a loophole in an international moratorium on whaling to kill the giants of the oceans in the name of research. The meat is then sold in supermarkets and restaurants.

"To claim that this is in any way scientific is to continue the charade that surrounded this issue from day one," said Garrett.

"It is explicitly clear from these images that this is the indiscriminate killing of whales, where you have a whale and its calf killed in this way," he said.

But Japan's whaling body accused Australia of spreading "emotional propaganda" which could damage relations and said the whales were not a mother and calf.

"The government of Australia's photographs and the media reports have created dangerous emotional propaganda that could cause serious damage to the relationship between our two countries," said Minoru Morimoto, director general of the government-supported Institute of Cetacean Research.

"It is important the Australian public is not misled into believing false information," he said.

Japan resumed its annual whale hunt last week after it was disrupted in mid-January by anti-whaling protests, including the boarding of one of its ships by two activists from the militant Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

But low fuel forced boats from Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace to return to port to refuel and only the customs vessel, the Oceanic Viking, is now tracking the whalers, who have a target of around 1,000 whales this southern summer.

The government is considering using its evidence in one of two international legal forums -- the International Court of Justice in The Hague or the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) said Japan's whaling programme breaches several international conventions and legal action could be quickly set in motion.

"The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea could be called upon to issue an injunction to stop the Japanese whalers... in as little as 14 days," legal expert Tim Stephens said in a statement issued by IFAW.

Greenpeace Australia-Pacific chief Steve Shallhorn said the pictures showed the world that the Japanese fleet was killing whales in a globally recognised sanctuary and did not care if they were mothers or infants.

"Now that the Australian government has its own evidence of the whale hunt, we expect this to spur them to action at the International Whaling Commission and beyond," Shallhorn said.

The Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary was proclaimed by the International Whaling Commission in 1994.

General facts about the Humpback Whale:

Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) are found in all the major oceans, in a wide band running from the Antarctic ice edge to 65° N latitude, though is not found in the eastern Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, or the Arctic Ocean.

The Humpback is a migratory species, spending its summers in cooler, high-latitude waters, but mating and calving in tropical and sub-tropical waters. An exception to this rule is a population in the Arabian Sea, which remains in these tropical waters year-round.

At birth humpbacks weigh around two tons and are on average 3.6 metres in length.

Adult humpbacks can grow up to 14 meters and weigh up to 40 tons.

Humpback whales are seasonal feeders and carnivores that filter feed tiny crustaceans (krill - mainly, copepods), plankton and small fish (including herring, mackerel, capelin, and sandeel) from the water.

An average-sized humpback whale will eat 2000-2500 kg each day during the feeding season in cold waters (about 120 days). They eat twice a day.

A calf's daily diet consists of around 120 gallons of milk.

The Humpback has an average life expectancy of 45-50 years.

Humpbacks are distinguished from other large whales primarily by their very long pectoral fins which are about one-third of their body length - averaging around 4.5 metres.

They have a flat head with golf ball size bumps called tubercles.

The four-chambered heart of the average humpback whale weighs about 195 kg - about as much as three average adult human beings.

What is the population status of the Humpback?

Prior to whaling, humpback whale numbers are thought to have exceeded 125,000.

Today it is estimated to be around 10,000 Humpbacks in the oceans according to the International Whaling Commission, with rates of increase of about 7% being reported for the eastern North Pacific from 1990-2002.

The amount is increasing daily due to better conservation and at the moment the estimated increase is 10% - 14% per year.

Is it legal to hunt whales?

Aboriginal subsistence whaling
The International Whaling Commission authorises catches under its aboriginal subsistence whaling scheme for:

1.Bowhead whales in Alaska and Chukotka (Russia).
2. Gray whales in Washington and Chukotka.
3. Fin whales and Minke whales in Greenland.
4. Humpback whales in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Hunting on humpbacked whales has been prohibited in the northern Atlantic Ocean since 1956, the Southern Hemisphere since 1963 and in the northern Pacific Ocean since 1966.

Scientific whaling
In 1982 the International Whaling Commission voted on a moratorium on commercial whaling to go into force in 1986.

Japan initially intended to oppose the moratorium, but in submission withdrew theirm opposition due to the threat of economic sanctions made by the United States.

Since 1986 Japan has been allowed to engage in limited, so-called scientific whaling of certain species and to sell the meat for consumption.

Japan carries out its research in two areas - the North Pacific and the Southern Hemisphere.

Why do the Japanese insist on whaling?

Whales have long been a source of food, oil, and crafts' material for the Japanese.

A famous Proverb quotes: "There's nothing to throw away from a whale except its voice."

In July 2004 it was reported, that a working group of the Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic had drawn up plans to leave the IWC in order to join a new pro-whaling organisation, NAMMCO, because of the IWC's refusal to back the principle of sustainable commercial whaling.

Japan is particularly opposed to the IWC Conservation Committee, introduced in 2003, which it says exists solely to prevent any whaling.

SEA SHEPHERD - Operation Migaloo

,

Sea Shepherd Launches Operation Migaloo to
Defend Whales in Antarctic Whale Sanctuary

Kiaora koutou,
This travesty annoys and upsets me, ggrrrrrrrrr :furious: :bomb: *%##*$ $$$$$, so i'll quietly post this and keep you posted as to the events that unfold.....God speed Sea Shepherd.....

This December, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will embark on its fourth expedition to the remote southern waters off the coast of Antarctica, with the launch of its latest Antarctic whale defense campaign: Operation Migaloo. Sea Shepherd has drawn a line in the sand when it comes to the humpback whale featured on its logo and will not stand by while the Japanese whalers target nearly 1000 whales for certain death, including 50 endangered humpback whales and 10 endangered fin whales in the Southern Oceans.

The campaign is named in honor of Migaloo, an endangered albino humpback who has become a national icon in Australia. This year, the sights of the ruthless Japanese harpooners are set square on the endangered humpbacks, meaning that Migaloo and all of his family are under imminent threat of death at the hands of Japanese pirate whalers.

Founder and President of Sea Shepherd, Captain Paul Watson, will soon embark with an international crew on the ship, the Robert Hunter, to enforce international conservation law and prevent the illegal slaughter of endangered species by an outlaw whaling fleet. As the relentless Japanese whalers seek to hunt down and kill Migaloo and his family, Sea Shepherd will be hunting the whalers with the firm objective of intervention against their illegal activities.

"I did not establish the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as a protest organization," said Captain Watson. "I have not gone to sea over all these years to simply bear witness to the atrocities that whalers continue to inflict upon the most gentle and intelligent beings in the seas. We are sea cops-operating legally under the guidelines of the United Nation's World Charter for Nature, which allow for the enforcement of international conservation law by non-governmental organizations in international jurisdictions."

For more than three decades, Sea Shepherd has been at the forefront of the whale wars, defending the gentle giants wherever and whenever they can. Sea Shepherd has tackled overwhelming odds with insufficient resources, won many victories, and saved the lives of thousands of whales. In 2005-2006, Sea Shepherd harried the Japanese fleet enough to ensure they went home 83 whales short of their self-appointed quota. In 2006-2007, the Japanese whalers fell over 500 whales short of their illegal quota. Sea Shepherd will return this year with a ship to match the speed of the Japanese fleet, new equipment for intervention, and an international crew of dedicated volunteers willing to spend their holidays at the bottom of the earth on a historic voyage to save whales.

Sea Shepherd is on a quest to protect the greatest treasure of the seas-the great whales. "We are obsessed with stopping the Cetacean Death Star, that viciously cruel killing machine otherwise known as the Nisshin Maru, and her ruthless fleet of hunter/killer boats armed with their explosive deadly blunt harpoons," said Captain Watson. "Because if we kill the whales, the sharks, the seals, and the sea turtles, we will destroy the very foundation of life in the oceans-and in so doing, we will destroy humankind."

Prime Minister Helen Clark says Japan's whaling fleet is heading for the Southern Ocean under the "deception" of a scientific expedition.

The fleet left on Sunday, led by the 8000-tonne Nisshin Maru, and conservation activists say it will for the first time target humpback whales.

Japan abandoned commercial whaling in accordance with an international moratorium in 1986, but the next year began hunting again for what it says is scientific research.

Whale meat ends up in Japanese supermarkets and restaurants, and this season the fleet intends catching about 850 minke whales and 50 fin whales.

Miss Clark said today she hoped there would not be a repeat of the "very unfortunate incidents" which occurred last season when protesters clashed with the fleet.

She also referred to the fire that crippled the Nisshin Maru and killed a crew member.

"Last year there was loss of life down there, it is very difficult for us, as the nearest country with any sort of search and rescue capacity, to offer any help," she said on TV One's Breakfast programme.

"It would just be better if the Japanese stayed home and did not come down under the guise, the deception, the claim that it is scientific whaling when they want to take a thousand whales."

Noho ora mai.
Take care..

WHALES AND DOLPHINS Fact Legend Myth

, , , ...

Kiaora folks and friends,I have gathered some interesting bits and pieces on my much loved creatures of the sea. The story of Pelorus Jack for me is a kindof childhood tale, but many saw the special Risso dolphin....
Furthermore I have posted a piece in Aotearoa., which looks deeper into the facts about certain dolphin. Some excellent video footage of the 'Duskie dolphin' and 'Dolphins using echolocation'. The photos I am particularly happy with.... Thanks as always to Teara...
'Whales and Dolphins', is an excerpt from 'Reed Book of Maori Mythology'. To see footage, mythology, photos and more facts on these magnificent mammals please hit this :star: Whales and Dolphins :star:

The story of Pelorus Jack

Pelorus Jack, a Risso’s dolphin (uncommon in New Zealand) that accompanied ships travelling between Wellington and Nelson, was the first dolphin in the world to be protected by law. He was so named because he would meet boats at the entrance to Pelorus Sound, in the Marlborough Sounds. First noticed in 1888 when he joined a steamer bound for Nelson, Pelorus Jack spent the next 24 years escorting boats from Pelorus Sound to treacherous French Pass, a narrow stretch of water between D’Urville Island and the mainland, where the water surges through at up to 8 knots.

Pelorus Jack always remained within a well-defined area. He joined boats heading for Nelson at the entrance to Pelorus Sound and swam to, but never through, French Pass. On the reverse journey, he met ships as they came out of the pass, staying with them for the 8 kilometres to Pelorus Sound before going his own way. He enjoyed swimming up against the boats and riding their bow waves.

Over the years, his fame grew. However, his celebrity attracted not only well wishers; in the early 1900s someone fired at him from a steamer. People demanded that Pelorus Jack be protected by law, which led to a 1904 order in council (renewed twice before he died). Pelorus Jack had become a tourist attraction, drawing such well-known figures as American writer Mark Twain and English author Frank T. Bullen.

Mystery surrounds Pelorus Jack’s death. Many believed that he was harpooned by Norwegian whalers, anchored off the entrance to Pelorus Sound in late April 1912. There is an account of an anonymous deathbed confession by a man who said he helped his father kill a dolphin stranded after a storm. They later realised it had been Pelorus Jack. Although there had been no alternative, the man was haunted by his action for the rest of this life.

Charlie Moeller, who maintained the marine light at French Pass, claims Pelorus Jack was washed up on a beach, where his carcass rotted. This latter account is likely; the dolphin was at least 24 years old, and probably died of old age.

The legend of Pelorus Jack lived on after his death. A chocolate bar was named after him and he is the subject of a number of songs.

NZ ranks high on world peace list

Time for change? SEEK NZ

New Zealand is officially the second most peaceful nation in the world according to the Global Peace Index

Norway is the most peaceful country in the world and Iraq the least. New Zealand ranks second and Australia is 25th on the list.

The Global Peace Index, published a week before a Group of Eight (G8) summit in Germany, rates 121 countries from Algeria to Zimbabwe on factors including levels of violence, organised crime and military expenditure.

While most European countries including Britain rank in the top, more peaceful, half of the league table, the United States is nearer the bottom in 96th place, while Russia is fifth from last on 118th.

"This is a wake-up call for leaders around the globe," said Steve Killelea, who commissioned the study from the Economist Intelligence Unit, which is linked to the news weekly The Economist.

"Countries like Japan and Germany can give hope and optimism to countries further down the Index that there can be light at the end of what may seem at the moment like a very dark tunnel," he added.

The index is backed by international figures including the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former US president Jimmy Carter and US economist Joseph Stiglitz, all winners of the Nobel prize winners. It is also supported by Queen Noor of Jordan.

Overall the study found that small, stable countries which are part of regional blocs such as the 27-nation European Union are most likely to be more peaceful. Income and education are crucial in promoting peace, it said.

"I believe there is a link between the peacefulness and the wealth of nations and therefore business has a key role to play in peace," said Killelea.

The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Buddhist leader who fled China after an aborted uprising in 1959, said the launch of the Index could be a useful tool for policymakers.

"Compiling and maintaining an Index of which countries are the most peaceful and publishing the results will undoubtedly make the factors and qualities that contribute to that status better known, and will encourage people to foster them in their own countries," he said.

The top 4 on the Global Peace Index:
